It’s been another difficult year for Britain’s high streets as banks continue to downsize their physical presence. Santander UK has confirmed the closure of 76 branches across the country in 2025, with a further branch in Surrey Quays, London, scheduled to shut on November 18. An additional 18 locations are also slated for closure, though exact dates have yet to be announced.
The decision reflects changing customer behaviour, as more people move towards online and mobile banking. Santander joins other major lenders—including Lloyds, NatWest, and Halifax—in reducing in-person banking options as digital use rises and footfall declines.
Why Santander Is Closing Branches
A Santander spokesperson said the bank was adapting to “customer behaviour changes” to ensure its network remains “fit for the future.”
“Our new combination of full-service branches, alongside Work Cafés, counter-free branches, and reduced-hours locations, aims to provide the right balance between digital banking and face-to-face support,” the spokesperson explained.
They added that closing a branch “is always a difficult decision,” but the move allows the business to balance investment between physical and digital services.
Santander also pointed to its Community Banker programme and enhanced mobile banking app as key parts of its evolving customer strategy.
Concerns for Vulnerable Customers
Consumer advocates have raised concerns that the ongoing wave of closures could disadvantage older and vulnerable customers, particularly those who rely on in-person banking or need regular access to cash.
Groups such as Age UK have previously warned that the rapid move to digital services risks leaving behind people who are less confident with technology or live in rural areas with limited online access.
