Reading Log Help

The Reading Log is used to help students increase in their understanding of the story. Reading Logs are sent home weekly. They are due the last day of the week, and new ones are sent home. Students are required to write a response to one of the books/chapters they read during their 20 minutes. For response ideas check out reading log questions below. There are four levels for reading log responses:

i)        Beginning level - A guardian asks the student 1 or 2 questions about the story, and then writes the student's answers in the log for them.

ii)       Intermediate level - A guardian ask questions about the story, but then the student writes their own answers.

iii)     Proficient level -students discuss the story with guardian, and then the student writes their ideas about a story.

iv)     Advanced level - students write their ideas about a story, and then discuss them with a guardian.
Reading homework will often be tailored to skills necessary for individual growth. It is usually necessary for a combination of assignments to reach the prescribed 20 minutes of practice time. Assignments may include a combination of sight word practice and either 3x reading race or read and retell.

Read 3x - Students should time themselves reading for 3 minutes. Then they should re-read the same book/chapter/story again twice more for the same amount of time trying to get farther. Or stop watch may be used to read shorter passages. Then attempt it twice more to get through faster.

Re-tell - Students gain understanding, make connections and ask questions through re-telling.
