Reading Homework Help

Second Grade Students need to read 20 minutes every night.

The reading log is used to increase student understanding when they read. Students need to fill out reading logs for each night they read. Click for reading log help.

Star Words: are also known as sight words and/or high frquency words. They are the 1,000 most commonly seen words. Many of them do not "play fair", meaning they don't look like they sound. Students will have cards at school to practice reading new words. Students should spend 3 minutes reading and re-reading using the Reading Race. Practicing star words is counted as part of their 20 minutes reading practice to be written in their log.

Reading Race is a game to help increase reading speed / fluency. Students read a story or section three times. Students time themselves each time trying to get faster or to practice reading with emotion / inflection. Check out timing the reader below.

Read and re-tell
is a strategy to increase understanding / comprehension. The student reads a book or selection and retells the story. It does not have to be a guardian. It could be a stuffed animal, teh family pet or a sibling.

Timing the reader:

  • Method 1: picking a book / selection / chapter / sight words and time how long it takes to read it. Then read it twice more timing the reader each time. Compare the times.
  • Method 2: Se tthe timer for 3-5 minutes. Read abook / selection / chapter / list of words and read for the allotted time. The the student re-reads the same section two more times trying to read further each time.
